Solar water Heating uses radiation from the sun to heat water in a panel often located on the roof which in turn can supply that heat as hot water or to a central heating system.  They are a cost effective way to provide hot water for your home and the fuel used is free abundant sunshine.

Basically a Solar Water Heating system includes a storage tank and a solar collector. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active and passive.

In an Active Solar Water Heating System the storage tank is ground or floor mounted and is below the level of the collector thus requiring a pump to move water or heat transfer fluid between the tank and the collector.

In a Passive Solar Water Heating System water flows through the system when warm water rises as cooler water sinks; this is called thermosiphon flow. The collector must be located below the storage tank so that warm water will rise into the tank. They are also known as Thermosiphon Systems. No pumping is required as the hot water naturally rises into the tank.

Solar panels should be located on a south-facing pitched roof, free of shade, the angle of inclination will depend on where you live and your local contractor will advise you on how to determine it. The collector may also be mounted on an angled frame on the ground or on a flat roof.

Installation of a Solar Water Heating System is not for the DIYer;  a professional licensed contractor should be hired  to ensure the proper installation and prevent the warranty from being  void. Before buying a Solar Water Heater and contacting a contractor I’d recommend for you to consider the cost of a solar water heater and evaluate your site’s solar resource; investigate local codes, covenants, and regulations.

As professional Solar Heating System Installers we’ll offer you a comprehensive service which includes:
  • Assessing the feasibility of your project
  • A site survey of your property
  • Determine the correct system size
  • Discuss the options with you including any building regulations or HOA regulations if  applicable and local codes
  • Issue a formal estimate
  • Install your solar heating system
  • Invoice you for the work
  • Issue a warranty

Maintenance
After installation, properly maintaining your system will keep it running smoothly.  Passive systems don’t require much maintenance. Plumbing and other conventional water heating components require the same maintenance as conventional systems. Glazing may need to be cleaned in dry climates where rainwater doesn’t provide a natural rinse.
Regular maintenance on simple systems can be as infrequent as every 3-5 years, preferably by a solar contractor. Systems with electrical components usually require a replacement part or two after 10 years.

In Mexico most water heaters are fed with LGP –Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The major sources of commercial LPG are natural gas processing and petroleum refining such procedures are not good for the environment as they deliver tons of CO2 to the atmosphere every year.

Installing a Solar Water Heater will reduce your carbon foot print and it’ll feel good on your pocket on the long run. It’s a win-win situation!
